The Heritage Rug Registry, a standing committee of The Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia (RHGNS) which aims to promote, record, and preserve the history of the unique craft and art of rug hooking specifically in Nova Scotia.
RHGNS has been supporting rug hookers from the maritimes and beyond since 1979. Their mission is to promote the art and craft of traditional rug hooking, through participation and sharing of information; and, in the process, preserve it for posterity. As part of RHGNS the Heritage Rug Registry seeks to gather our collective history and tell it’s story through many genres and styles of hooked rugs.

What is a hooked rug?
A hooked rug is any rug or mat created by bringing loops up through a “backing” (i.e. linen, burlap, muslin, monks cloth, rug warp, etc.) using a tool with a hook on it (resembling a crochet hook) in one hand and carrying the yarn or wool strips along the underside of the backing using one’s thumb and forefinger of the other hand
