Hazel was born in Lunenburg County and lived there during her lifetime (Northwest, Oakland, Mahone Bay). She was of German descent. She was a homemaker; however, they raised sheep, and the wool from the sheep was used to hook rugs. The background and outside edge of this rug are natural sheep’s wool. She also dyed the wool she spun into yarn.
The rug is hooked with 100% wool yarn on burlap backing. The outside edges of the rug are crocheted using the sheep’s wool yarn.  It is believed Hazel hooked this rug while living in Oakland, Lunenburg County.
Hazel would hook rugs and would trade them for oilcloth from a door to door peddler who would come to the area. (This was a common practice years ago for people to exchange their hooked rugs for oilcloth. The rugs were then taken to the United States and sold.)
The owner of this hooked family treasure is Hazel’s granddaughter who also rug hooks. (Hazel Andrews: 1911-2001)
