This rug was purchased online from a seller in Ontario in 2024. Note the paper tag at the top of the image that reads, “Handmade Hooking – Made in Cheticamp – 100% wool – Mrs. Joseph C. Gaudet” and writing in blue is the selling price “$55.00”.
The rug is hooked using 2 ply wool yarn in natural white/cream, primary red and dyed black. The composition is divided into three squares, the top and bottom each feature a symmetrical red leafy plant motif, and in the middle is a black mythical creature of some sort (dragon? centaur? griffon?), facing to the right. All three sections are framed by a border in each colour. The rug has a thick fringe at the bottom and a cord for hanging on the wall at the top made of the same white yarn as the background.
The hooking is very uniform, filling each gap in the weave of the burlap backing. The design/background seem to have been outlined first and filled in concentrically.

I love this rug dearly and would love to know more about it and its maker. I looked for information about Mrs. Gaudet but couldn’t find any information other than the census records show a Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gaudet living in Inverness between 1940’s-1960’s.
