The rug pattern for this hooked rug can be found in the Garrett’s, New Glasgow, NS’s rug hooking pattern catalogue. The rug hooking patterns were sold around the world. For its age (over 100 years old) it is in good condition.
It is made with recycled clothing including cottons, knits, mixed materials on burlap backing. There is cotton fabric stitched along the outside edge. The cotton fabric is stitched and showing on the front of the rug, folded over and stitched down on the back. It shows some wear and there is a small stain in one area of the rug. Fading is very minimal which tells us it was not exposed to sunlight which would cause fading over time.
The rug hooker was a resident of Mount Thom, Pictou County, NS. Her family immigrated to Nova Scotia from Scotland. Mary lived in Mount Thom all her life. She was a homemaker and caregiver for the family.
This rug has been passed down through the generations and is now with Mary’s a niece  who lives in Pictou County, NS, not far from Mount Thom. This is a real treasure.
