There is minimal information available about this beatiful hooked rug. The current owner purchased it from the rug hooker’s granddaughter who was selling it in Mahone Bay. The seller recalls it was in her grandmother’s parlour when she was a toddler (over 70 years ago). The rug hooker was from “up Yarmouth way” and hooked with the Yarmouth rug hookers for a while.
The background is hooked using a variety of mixed dark greens, and there are lots of leaves, roses, tiger lilies, etc. in this design. There is an oval ribbon design around the inside edge of the floral design. It is hooked with wool strips as well as other mixed materials on burlap backing. Cotton binding is sewn on the entire edge of this rug. The current owner has repaired the areas where the cotton binding needed repairing. There is some fading however, given the age of this rug and its location in a parlour, it is in good shape for its age.
