This lovely hooked rug was hooked approximately around 1880! Mary was born in Tidnish, NS and lived in that area all her life (born: 1854; died: 1932). She was very young when she began rug hooking. This rug was one of her earlier rugs. It is now owned by her great, great granddaughter. It was always stored away (sometimes between the mattress and the bed springs) or placed in the formal parlor for careful usage.
It is hooked with various recycled materials on burlap backing. The binding is sewn on the front and folded over to the back and stitched down. Some sections of the binding is missing and some loops have been pulled out in areas however, it is vibrant and bright on both sides which tells us it has not been exposed to sunlight. It is a beautiful family heirloom!
