This rug was hooked by Margaret Anna (Crowdis) Marple who resided all her life in the Margaree Valley area of NS. The rug is a primitive design which may be been one ordered through the Eaton’s catalogue given the rural location in which she lived. It is hooked on burlap backing using many types of recycled materials that would have been available during those times. The edges are whip stitched with yarn.
Margaret learned to rug hook from her mother as well as her grandmother. She would have hooked as a teenager and continued until the early 1950’s.
She would neer exhibit her rugs as she would have believed that the workmanship was not good enough to exhibit. They were hooked for family use.
