“J. Worthington Winthrop III” is what Doris Eaton named this hooked rug. It is hooked using roving, recycled and found wool fabric on linen backing. At the top of the rug you see she has hooked the title of this rug and also “Pash”. Pash (short for Patience) was Doris’ grandmother’s name. Doris called her Pashy. Pashy loved to hook rugs during the winter months.
Doris tells us the story of this rug in her book, “A Lifetime of Rug-Hooking”. Her grandmother often wore a sweater. Doris has hooked her wearing a sweater. She always wore an apron and her hair was snow white. Pashy had a flock of egg-laying hens and took in laundry to earn extra money. She would hang the laundry on her clothesline which was stretched between three apple trees and raised in the middle with a forked pole. She had a large quince tree by the back door and she made the most delicious quince jelly.
Doris drew the pattern for this rug from an old photograph.
J. Worthington Winthrop III is Pashy’s cat. He followed Pashy everywhere.
