This mat is hooked using acrylic yarn on burlap backing. The image is of the Parkdale/Maplewood Museum in Maplewood, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia which opened in 1907. The mat was commissioned by the museum curator. The Museum Society agreed to pay Ormand a fee for the mat however, he refused payment. He was pleased to create this mat for the Museum. You can see Ormand’s initails in the lower right corner
The edges of the mat are crochet with acrylic yarn. Ormand learned to rug hook at the age of 6 by his mother. He was a veteran of WWII and after his retirement, he would spend time rug hooking while caring for his ill wife.
Today, you can view this mat at the Parkdale/Maplewood Museum. It is a most interesting place and much history of the area can be found there including other hooked rugs.
