This rug is hooked on burlap backing using various mixed materials including knits as were most hooked rugs/mats at that time. The burlap is frayed around the outside edge of this rug. There probably was binding sewn around the edges originally however, over time however it had become worn and removed.

The rug hooker,  Annie (Beaton) Oulton was born in Cape Breton and moved to Lorneville, NS where she lived most of her life (born: 1853; died 1938). She, with her family, moved to Lorneville from Cape Breton to work on the ship railway. Being of Scottish descent, she would sing in Gaelic. Her husband’s family were Yorkshire settlers from Jolicure, New Brunswick who settled in Lorneville, NS as well.
This is a family heirloom now owned by one of Annie’s great granddaughters.
