Annie (Beaton) Oulton was born in Cape Breton and moved to Lorneville, NS where she lived most of her life. The oval hooked rug is hooked on burlap backing using various mixed materials including knits as were most hooked rugs/mats at that time. There is binding sewn around the edge of the rug showing on the front and is folded over and stitched down on the back of the rug. It is in good condition although there is some fading which is not unusual given the age of this hooked rug.
A little bit about Annie (Beaton) Oulton: She, with her family, moved to Lorneville from Cape Breton to work on the ship railway. Being of Scottish descent, she would sing in Gaelic. Her husband’s family were Yorkshire settlers from Jolicure, New Brunswick who settled in Lorneville, NS as well.
This is a family heirloom now owned by one of Annie’s great granddaughters.
