“Port Mouton, Nova Scotia Train Station” is the title of this pictorial. Susan’s family lived in this train station from 1954 to 1962 while her dad was the station agent there. This hooked piece was made as a gift for him when he retired after many years with Canadian National (CN). The hooked rug shows the family including their beagle, “Flip”. Susan and her brother are waving to the train. Her sister is on the swing. Her mom is hanging out the wash and her dad is in his office window. A true “story rug”.
This rug was included in a rug exhibition at the River House, Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia in 2013 and was also one of several juried rugs displayed in 1987 at the Mount St. Vincent University Art Gallery in Halifax in the “Contemporary NS Hooked Rugs Exhibit”.
It is hooked using recycled wool, some hand-dyed on burlap backing. Binding shows on the front edges and is turned over to the back and stitched down. Susan’s initials and year this lovely story rug was created are in the lower right corner, “SDG86”. It is in excellent condition.
Susan learned rug hooking from well known rug hooker and artist, Doris Eaton in 1979 at the DesBrisay Museum. She also quilts, sews and enjoys water-colour painting. Susan’s great grand-mother and paternal grand-mother also hooked rugs.
