“Are We There Yet? Pubnico, NS” This hooked rug shows Susan and her family in her dad’s 1958 Plymouth on a Sunday drive to her grand-parents’ home in Pubnico, NS. You can see her grandfather watching from the barn and her grandmother, wearing an apron, greets them as they arrive. The ducks are her father’s pets he had when he was a boy. Susan reflects on the wonderful memories of her grandparents and their house she visited many times as a child. She enjoys hooking rugs that are reminders of her heritage.
This rug was designed and hooked by Susan while living on Bush Island, NS. It has been exhibited at River House, Petite Riviere, NS where a rug exhibit was on display in 2013. It was included in the exhibit organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (November 1989 – May 1990) in England, Scotland and Ireland and was also included in the “Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs II” book published by Rug Hooking Magazine in 1992.
The rug is hooked using recycled wool, some hand-dyed on burlap backing. The binding is sewn on the front, folded over and stitched down on the back. Susan’s initials and year this hooked treasure was made, 1989, are seen in the lower left corner.
