This hooked rug shows a boy playing “hoop rolling” with is dog. You will see what appears to be a school in the background. This rug was always kept on the floor in the spare room of Sarah Jane (Dobson) Moore’s home in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It is in good condition with limited fading over the years.
Sarah Jane (Dobson) Moore was born in 1878 and passed away in 1950 which tells us this rug was hooked many, many years ago.
It is hooked on burlap backing with various recycled materials including knitted fabric, mixed materials including coat weight wool strips and tweeds. The binding is a heavy cotton fabric which shows on the front outside edge and folded over and stitched to the back of the rug.
Sarah Jane had 13 children. She enjoyed quilting as well as rug hooking. This is a wonderful family heirloom her great-grandson now owns.
