This is a lovely country winter scene hooked in yarn on burlap backing. The outside edges are folded to the back and stitched down. This is a one-of-a-kind design as the rug hooker created the design as he hooked along.  The pattern was not drawn out on the burlap before he started, it was blank.
The rug hooker, Ormand C. Kaulback, known as “Ormie” was born in Maplewood, Nova Scotia. He was what we call a “jack of all trades”. He was a woodsman, farmer, cook, drove taxi and also served in the 52nd battery, 3rd Anti-Tank Regiment, RCA during World War II. His mother had taught him how to rug hook when he was 6 years old. Upon his retirement he took up the craft of rug hooking once again.  He would sell his hooked rugs at the shop known as “Rags to Rugs” in Mahone Bay. Tourists would visit the shop every year and buy his hooked rugs.
